I’ve had weight loss surgery - can I have a Colonic?

Eligibility & Considerations

If your surgery was more than 6 months ago, absolutely you can!

Can me and my partner get a colonic at the same time?

Cost & Appointments

We only have one colonic room and can therefore only treat one person at a time. If you’re wanting back to back appointments, when you head online to make your booking, one person will book for (example) 1pm and then the other will head on and book for 2pm.

How long do I need to wait until my next colonic?

General Information

You need a minimum of 22 hours between your colonic appointments, although colonics are best spaced 2-3 days apart.

I’m feeling quite bloated and foggy post colonic, why?

Before & After Colonic

These symptoms are very common post colonic, especially if you’ve been struggling with inflammation and gut issues for years. During your Initial treatment with us it has likely disturbed the environment within your Colon; and its your bodies way of letting you know that it needs a helping hand. Which is why we encourage a series of colonics (at least 3, spaced 2-3 days apart) when starting out.

Can I bring my Child in for a Colonic?

Eligibility & Considerations

We only treat 14 years and older, with a parent/caregiver present for the entirety of the session.

Do males get Colonics?

Eligibility & Considerations

Absolutely! About 30% of clients at Gravity Colon Therapy are males, and that number is increasing as time goes on.

I’m pregnant/breast feeding - Can I have a colonic?

Eligibility & Considerations

If you have been using colonics as part of your health and wellness regime prior to pregnancy, then you may utilise colonics during pregnancy, but only after the 1st trimester. If you’ve never had a colonic before, then it is not recommended you start whilst you’re pregnant. Like with any new detox methods, you don’t want to start these whilst pregnant as you don’t know how your body might respond. Colonic’s when you’re breastfeeding are definitely recommended - Got to keep that breast milk clean!

Will I need to stay home afterwards?

Before & After Colonic

Most people can leave their colonic session and go about their daily business without incident; it is rare for a person to have a problem on the way home or later in the day. You are given time at the end of your colonic to go to the toilet and shower if you would like, so that you are ready to continue on with your day. If you are concerned, you can plan to stay home after your first session to see how you go, but it is usually unnecessary.

Why don’t we use disposable equipment?

Safety & Equipment

Do you go to restaurants and refuse to use the stainless steel knife and fork and ask for disposable?

Do you go to your dentist and ask them to use disposable instruments in your mouth? The same goes for colonics! Water flows much better through stainless steel then it does through plastic, plus a stainless steel speculum is A LOT more comfortable than a plastic. We also believe in preserving this beautiful earth we live on, and try out best not to add any more unnecessary plastic to our landfill.

Each instrument is diligently scrubbed with antibacterial soap + disinfected in 30% hydrogen peroxide and then medically sterilised - no different to how your Dentist would sterilise the equipment they use in their practices.

Do colonics wash away healthy bacteria and nutrients from the colon?

Safety & Equipment

The idea of washing out good bacteria when doing a colonic is not accurate. We don’t use anything but filtered water which is not destructive. If you have good bacteria, it’s often so far into the folds of the intestine that it won’t wash away. We provide a probiotic drink after each appointment and recommend probiotics for anyone just to be sure.

Are there any dangers associated with getting a colonic?

Safety & Equipment

There is virtually no danger with a colonic when performed correctly, and this is why we advocate so much for the Woods Gravity method. We don’t force water into the colon and blow it up like balloon, which is what many clinics unfortunately practice.

A colonic should never be performed after recent colon surgery or on someone with active ulcerative colitis.

When choosing a therapist or clinic, make sure that you do some research before receiving any treatments. Make sure to ask about the type of water filtration system. If the establishment is dirty or the therapist makes you feel uncomfortable, you should leave. Choosing a therapist is no different from choosing any healthcare professional. You want to have a good rapport and feel safe and relaxed. You may end up staying with one therapist or clinic for years, so it’s important to educate yourself, ask questions, and choose wisely.

How can clean water flow into the colon and waste matter flow out through the same tube?

Procedure & Experience

The process is similar to the way that we can eat and breathe through the same “tube.” Think of it as a fork in the tube outside of the body. Clean water flows into the colon from one side of the fork and waste matter flows out of the colon through the other side of the fork.

How many colonics will I need and how often should I get them?

General Information

Colonics are best practiced in a series, but one is better than none! To begin to understand the benefits of Wood’s Gravity Method, a minimum of three sessions is recommended. The duration of each session is one hour. Colonics are safe to be practiced every 22 hours, no more, but best is every two days.

When fasting or cleansing, we recommend a series, as once the body starts releasing, it transports deeper toxins from different cells and organs and dumps them again in to the colon. This is why multiple sessions are highly recommended for maximum benefit!

Should I fast before my colonic?

Procedure & Experience

It is recommended that you don’t eat for an hour before a colonic, but it is not necessary to fast. In saying that, many people find it beneficial to have colonics before, during, and after a fast (depending on its length) to assist in the removal of toxins from the body.

Are colonics painful?

General Information

A colonic can sometimes feel a bit like diarrhoea as the colon muscles contract to expel the loosened waste matter.

Although there can be moments of discomfort during a colonic, they are usually of a short duration and are well-tolerated. Often client’s discomfort comes more from their preconceived ideas of colonics and not from the actual procedure! Please keep in mind that your therapist is there to ensure that you feel at ease with the process, which often alleviates most nerves. Many people actually enjoy the colonic procedure and feel lighter and more comfortable as the session progresses.

Won’t laxatives or enemas do the same thing?

Alternatives to Colonics

Laxatives, even natural ones, usually work by irritating the colon to get it to contract. In the short term, this may be fine, but long-term use and abuse of laxatives can lead to dependency and intestinal disorders. Enemas will assist the body in emptying only the last 5-10 inches of the colon, whereas a colonic will work to get water around to the cecum (top of the colon) so this can empty, removing waste and toxicity in the process. A Woods Gravity Colonic is 14X what an Enema can do.

Are there any risks with getting a colonic?

Safety & Equipment

Like with any procedure or treatment you receive, there will always be risks involved. It is important you do your own research about colonics and the clinic you are visiting prior to getting a colonic. The risks with any type of colonic are very minimal to begin with, and we use a Gravity system, and in-particular the Woods Gravity Method. This method works on rehabilitating the colon through making the peristalsis stronger, where as many places rely on filling the colon with water like a balloon, and then ‘blasting’ it out, which overtime can make the colon ‘A-tonic’ and reliant on colonics. At Gravity Colon Therapy, we don’t want you to ever become reliant on colonics, we want to empower your body to be able to work for you!

Why have a colonic?

General Information

The colon is designed to completely and naturally remove digestive and cellular waste from the body. Unfortunately, the modern diet of cooked, processed and devitalised foods combined with low water intake, sedentary lifestyles and stress, has contributed to an epidemic of digestive disorders. These include constipation, diarrhoea, gas and bloating, diverticulitis, colitis, Crohn’s disease, spastic colon, and irritable bowel syndrome, to name a few. It is not uncommon to hear of bowel transit times of anywhere from three days to two weeks! The buildup of waste matter within the colon can lead to auto-intoxication and overgrowth of yeast (candida albicans), prevent proper absorption of nutrients through the intestinal wall, and hinder the muscular movement of the colon, leading to sluggish peristalsis (the muscle contractions that move matter through your colon) and chronic constipation. A colonic can help to loosen up and remove impacted waste matter from the colon, as well as improve and even restore the healthy muscular action of the colon.

Of course, you don’t have to be suffering from severe digestive disorders to benefit from a colonic. Even clients with no reported digestive issues have been amazed at what has been removed from their colon, such as mucus, worms and undigested food. Clients have reported benefits such as better sleep, clearer skin, less gas and bloating and more regular bowel movements following their treatments.

What is the colon hydrotherapy procedure?

Procedure & Experience
  • Gravity method functions as a “closed system", which means elimination exits through a closed tube; there is no smell and no wetness.
  • To receive the treatment, you will be laying on a cushioned bed, on top of a protective under-pad, and you your body will be covered with a towel throughout the session for privacy. (A toilet is located in the treatment room for easy access immediately following your session)
  • A tank of body temperature, filtered water sits elevated above the treatment table, utilising gravity for the flow of water.
  • To perform the treatment, a sterilised stainless steel instrument called a speculum is lubricated and inserted into the rectum. (Don’t fear, the insertion is painless and is only two inches deep.)
  • Two separate firm latex surgical tubes are attached to the speculum: one transports water into your body and the other transports the water and waste out. The water feed-in tube is narrow and the waste tube is wide which means that the emphasis is always on the outflow and not the input of water to your body.
  • At the beginning of the colonic, you will be lying on your left side, in a fetal position. The colon hydrotherapist will start the session. They will be working with the natural rhythm of your body by gently pulsing the evacuation tube, and as well, will apply abdominal massage to assist your body in eliminating at various points in the treatment. The water is kept at body temperature.
  • At a certain point in the colon hydrotherapy treatment, you will be asked to turn onto you back where typically you will be lying for most of the session. Towards the end of the session, you will turn back to your left side to end the treatment.
  • Retentions of Water: At various points in the colon hydrotherapy treatment, the therapist will administer retentions of water. This means that they close off the waste tube so the fresh water can now move more thoroughly into your body without simultaneously exiting. This is done to facilitate a deeper release of matter and provide for a more thorough treatment. This is always done in alignment with your comfort level and often with guided deep breathing. The therapist will release the water the moment you inform them you need to release it.
  • Most sessions require about 45 minutes and upon completion the therapist will remove the instrument from your body. You will then be able to sit on the toilet once they leave the room to discharge any remaining water, waste, and gas before you get dressed.
  • Most clients walk out of the treatment room feeling an overall sense of rejuvenation and clarity, a calmness, and true sense of joy!

What is the colon?

General Information

The colon, or large intestine, comprises the last 5-5 ½ feet of the digestive tract. Although some nutrients and water are absorbed through the colon wall, its primary function is the removal of digestive and cellular wastes from the body. The bowel transit time, from the moment a person eats until the waste matter is excreted from the colon, can be anywhere from 12-28 hours in a healthy person, depending on water intake and the type of foods consumed.

Why is a 15 x Series of Woods Gravity colonics over 2-3 months recommended?

General Information

The intestine is also a muscle and if it does not work properly, it will become weak. If you’re not having a bowel movement after each meal, this is constipation, resulting in an accumulation of toxicity. During a Woods Gravity Colonic, by putting water in the colon and the therapist manipulating the tube, this will strengthen the muscle of the colon, leaving you more able to go to the toilet on your own.A full series of colonic hydrotherapy is considered 15 sessions over 2 to 3 months, working with the practitioner. What this does is that you will notice you are pooping more on your own and your peristalsis will move more and more. By the end, you should be able to poop multiple times a day so you don’t need to come back. We don’t want to make you reliant on colonics like the pharmaceuticals make you reliant on chemicals. You can come back maybe once a year just to unload those toxins you can’t control. This is a tremendous way to release what you holding inside your body and the best thing you can do for your health right now to alleviate what you’ve done in the past and prevent what’s coming in the future.

What should I expect over the next few days after my treatment?

Before & After Colonic

Most clients experience a sense of lightness, feelings of happiness, joy and freeness that they have never had before. Describing it as “a feeling like a big weight had been lifted from their body” and “ a heightened mental, emotional and physical clarity”, clients often float out of the office as if they are on top of the world. Although most participants feel high levels of energy, some however may experience transient effects of the toxins being stirred up. This process is called a “Healing Crisis”.

The symptoms may include: aches, pains, headaches, nausea, fatigue, hunger, feelings of sadness, anger, bloating, hives, skin eruptions etc. These symptoms are all natural responses to the healing process and will pass. Drinking plenty of water helps to flush the system of toxins. It is very important NOT to suppress these symptoms with over the counter or western medicines. Please allow your body to heal itself!!! This is part of the whole process of regenerating and shedding the very things that made your body sick to begin with. When you heed the call to pass through this transition phase, you are sure to come out shining on the other side, invigorated and renewed.

Please note: The most common post colonic experience is a slight delay in bowel movements and then a resumption of somewhat larger, easier to move stool. Sometimes if the colon is weak and sluggish, there may be no bowel movement for several days after the colonic. This is not due to the colonic, but rather to the weakness of the muscles in the colon and indicates that the colon requires strengthening and healing, thus more treatments.

What are good cleansing meals I can follow before my colon hydrotherapy?

Food Combining Chart

Principles of acid and alkaline are as old as yin/yang. In the chemical digestion of food, different types of food require different enzymes to digest. When we eat foods that digest with an acidic enzyme with foods that require an alkaline enzyme, the chemical reaction is neutralised, and digestion greatly slows. For now, general principles that will make your stomach happy consist of keeping starches and proteins separate and eating fruit alone and only on an empty stomach. This means one meal will not contain both bread and cheese, nor will be milk and cookies! Try this on your own and listen to how your body responds.

Food Order

Eat easiest-to-digest foods first! These are usually those containing the highest amount of water. Any quick-digesting foods must wait until the slowest-digesting foods leave the stomach before they can ext, a process which can take up to 6 or 8 hours. While waiting, the fruit, cooked and raw vegetables, and some of the starches undergo some decomposition and fermentation, producing gas, acid and even alcohol along with indigestion.

How do I prepare for my colonic?

Procedure & Experience

PREPARATION TO BENEFIT MOST FROM THE SESSION:

  • Be well hydrated - drink more than usual (at least 3 litres/day) 5 days before and on the day of the treatment.
  • Be light. Choose light and hydrated food in the previous days.
  • Avoid gas-forming food or wrong food combinations (fruit alone and fat and proteins separate).
  • Absolutely no alcohol within 48 hours of your session.
  • You may skip a meal before or at least refrain from eating in the two hours prior to your appointment; you’ll intuitively want to eat lightly and healthy afterwards.
  • If possible, have a bowel movement before your session to allow better flow of water through the gravity-method process.
